Advanced Tactical and Reconnaissance System (ATARS)

OH-58D with Eagle Eye

The ATARS program added remote tasking and control of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) to the OH-58D helicopter. I refined the interaction of the system and integrated a prototype touchpad (1993) for the control of the on-screen cursor.

At this point in time, no graphical user interfaces had been integrated into a helicopter and I was able to procure one of the first demonstration touchpads available.

The touchpad reduced vibration induced motion of the cursor and provided the capability to map customized finger movements to macro tasks within the application.

I worked closely with our manufacturing shop to design and build necessary parts for the simulator cab.

Tasks and responsibilities included:

  • Management of budget and schedule
  • Simulation testing of system
  • GUI templates & rapid prototyping
  • Touchpad prototype control enclosure & mounting
